Outdoor Christmas lights: mains, battery or solar
Three power sources compete for the same job outside: a mains plug, a battery box and a solar panel. Mains is the most common here, then solar, then battery. Plug-in strings run up to 120 m in this collection, while battery strings stop at 15 m and solar sets at 24 m.
| Power | Lengths here | Strength | Weak spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mains plug | 2 to 120 m | Brightest and steadiest, in any length | Needs an outdoor socket within reach of the lead |
| Battery, often AA | 5 to 15 m | Works anywhere, including shade | Batteries run down, so a timer matters |
| Solar | 5 to 24 m | No socket and no running cost | Short winter days give a small charge |
Prices follow the power source: battery and solar sets cost less than plug-in ones, and the longest mains reels cost the most. Our guide to solar or battery Christmas lights explains how a December day affects a solar panel.
What an outdoor rating means
Look at the IP number, not at the word waterproof. IP44 means the casing resists splashes from any direction, and IP65 means it resists water jets. Around a third of the listings here show IP44 and a third IP65, and a few go higher.
- The rating covers the lights. Keep the plug, any transformer and the battery box dry, in a weatherproof box or indoors, because some listings say the plug itself is not waterproof.
- Plug mains sets into a socket protected by an RCD, and keep cable joins off the ground and out of puddles.
- Fix cables with clips made for the job, not nails or staples, and leave a little slack so wind cannot tug on the plug.
- More than half of the listings include a timer. It limits the hours the lights run and saves batteries on battery sets.
How long should outdoor Christmas lights be?
Measure the run, add the unlit lead from the plug to the first bulb, and round up to the next length on sale.
| What you are lighting | How to measure | Length to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Front door frame | Width plus twice the height | About 5 m for a door 2 m high and 0.9 m wide |
| Outside of a window, 120 cm square | Width plus twice the height | 3.6 m for the top and both sides |
| Garden tree, 7ft | Wrap the trunk and branches | 20 m |
| Fence, gate or railing | The length of the run | The run, plus the lead to the socket |
A garden tree follows the indoor rule: about 15 m wraps a 6ft tree and 20 m a 7ft tree, with more for a dense look.
Plain strings, globe strings and icicle drops
Most of the lights here are plain fairy-light strings. Globe and festoon strings (larger bulbs on a heavier cable), icicle drops for gutters and eaves, and cluster sets for dense coverage also appear, so check the title and photo for the shape.
Hanging outdoor Christmas lights
Test each set indoors before it goes up, and put it on a timer or switch it off at night. Our guide to hanging outdoor Christmas lights safely covers clips, cable routes and sockets.
For wreaths, planters and door garlands, a battery string from fairy lights is simpler than a mains set. A light-up figure on the lawn follows the same rules: see light-up reindeer, or browse the main Christmas lights range.
Frequently asked questions: Outdoor Christmas Lights
What are the best Christmas lights for outside use?
Choose by power first and rating second. Mains sets are the brightest and run up to 120 m in this collection, battery sets work in shade, and solar sets need a spot with daylight. Whichever you pick, look for IP44 or higher and a timer.
Can outdoor Christmas lights stay up all year?
Most Christmas sets are sold for seasonal use. Sun, wind and frost wear the cable and the plug, so taking sets down in January and checking them before next season is the safer habit. Permanent house lighting is a different product, usually fitted by an electrician.
Do LED Christmas lights go out if one bulb is out?
It depends on how the set is wired. In some strings a failed bulb breaks the circuit and a section goes dark, while in many modern LED strings the rest stay lit. The listing rarely says, so read the reviews for complaints of a half-dead string.
How long do LED Christmas lights last?
LED bulbs are generally rated for tens of thousands of hours, which at six hours a night is many seasons. In practice a set tends to fail at the cable, the plug or the battery box first, and water is the usual cause outdoors. Taking sets down in January and storing them dry helps them last.
What are the best battery-operated Christmas lights for outdoor use?
Look for an IP rating of IP44 or higher, a timer so the batteries last through the evenings you need, and a battery box you can keep out of puddles. Battery strings here run from 5 m to 15 m, often on AA batteries. For a long run or a big tree, a mains set is the better fit.
Is it a fire hazard to leave Christmas lights on?
Any mains lighting left on unattended carries some risk. LEDs run cool, which lowers it, but a damaged cable or a wet plug can still cause a fault. The usual advice is to switch lights off at night or put them on a timer.
