Christmas garlands for stairs: measure the banister first
Run a piece of string along the rail from the top post to the bottom post, then measure the string. That is the length for a straight run. For loose swags between fixings, add about a quarter: a loop that sags 18 cm every 60 cm uses roughly 25% more garland than a straight line.
Where a width is listed, full 2.7 m (9 ft) pine garlands are 25 cm wide. Slim ropes, such as a 10 m garland about 9 cm wide, cost less per metre but look thin on a wide banister. Snow-tipped garlands and ones with cones and berries look complete as they are; plain green ones are a base for your own ribbon. Most garlands here cost between £12 and £36, and the median is about £23.
How many garlands for your staircase
| Rail length | Length with loose swags (+25%) | Garlands of 2.7 m (9 ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 m | 3.1 m | 2 |
| 3.5 m | 4.4 m | 2 |
| 4.5 m | 5.6 m | 3 |
| 5.5 m | 6.9 m | 3 |
The figures are for one side, so double them if you dress both sides of the staircase. Garlands with a wire core can be joined end to end by twisting the cores together and hiding the join under a bow.
Lit or unlit, battery or plug-in
A lit garland adds batteries to the job. Lit garlands in the listings carry 20 to 100 LEDs, and the battery ones usually take 3 AA batteries in one pack, with a timer or a remote on some. Two garlands mean two packs, so hide each one at a post or behind a bow where you can reach it. If a garland is corded, plan the socket first and keep the lead off the steps.
Fixing Christmas garlands for stairs to the banister
- Cable ties or florist wire round the spindles hold best. Hide them under a bow or a branch.
- On a painted or varnished banister, avoid tape and nails. Removable adhesive hooks suit the wall side, but test one on a hidden patch first because they can lift paint.
- Leave the top of the handrail free to grip: hang the garland on the outer face of the rail or along the spindles, not over the top.
- Fix every 50 cm or so, and keep the swag depth the same all the way down.
Christmas garlands for stairs: lit, plain or extra long
For lights already wired in, see pre-lit Christmas garlands; for plain greenery in more lengths, Christmas garlands. Both sit under wreaths and garlands. The extra-long ropes of 10 m and 16 m in the listings are unlit, so wind fairy lights through them if you want light.

Frequently asked questions: Staircase Garlands
What is the best garland to put on a staircase?
The one that covers your measured rail, usually two full 2.7 m (9 ft) garlands for a rail of 2.5 to 3.5 m. Snow-tipped and berry garlands look finished as they are, while plain green ones suit your own ribbon and baubles. Check the width in the listing, because a slim garland looks sparse on a wide banister.
How do I attach a Christmas garland to a staircase?
Cable ties or florist wire round the spindles hold best, and a bow or a branch hides them. Fix the garland every 50 cm or so. On a painted or varnished banister, avoid tape and nails, and test any removable hook on a hidden patch first.
Should a garland start at the top or the bottom of the stairs?
Either works. Start at the end where the battery pack or plug will sit, because that end has to stay reachable. Hold the garland against the rail, mark the fixing points, then work along it keeping the same swag depth.
How can I decorate my staircase for Christmas without garlands?
Tie a ribbon bow to every second spindle, or hang small wreaths from the spindles on loops of ribbon. A string of battery fairy lights along the rail gives light without greenery, and stockings can hang from the newel posts.
Can I put a Christmas garland on outdoor steps?
Only if the listing says outdoor use, since several garlands are listed for indoor use only. Fix it to the railing with cable ties so wind cannot lift it, and keep any battery pack or plug dry. Lights need an outdoor rating of their own.
