Boxes of similar size can hold anything from 110 g to 289 g of chocolate, so compare the price per 100 g. Divide the price by the weight in grams and multiply by 100: a £6 calendar with 100 g costs £6 per 100 g, and a £12 calendar with 250 g costs £4.80, so the dearer box is the cheaper chocolate.

Choosing a chocolate advent calendar

• Doors: most have 24, and a few add a 25th. One listing holds 25 chocolates.
• Allergens: the box lists them. Milk and soya are common in chocolate and fillings can contain nuts, so read the list before you wrap one for someone with an allergy. Dark chocolate is not automatically dairy-free.
• Best-before date: titles mix 2025 and 2026 editions, and a calendar ordered in October still has to be in date on 1 December. Check the date on the box or the listing.
• Size: most boxes are 27 to 38 cm on the long side and 2 to 4 cm deep. The Tony’s Chocolonely one is bigger, at 52.7 cm, so measure the shelf first.
• Warmth: keep it in a cool room, away from a radiator or a sunny windowsill, because chocolate softens when it warms up.
• Dogs: chocolate is toxic to dogs, so keep any calendar out of their reach. A calendar made for dogs is a separate product.
