Slim Christmas trees: pencil styles, 4ft to 7ft

A slim tree is as tall as a full one at about half the width: 45 to 65cm across at 6ft, against 95 to 120cm. These pencil and slimline trees suit corners, hallways and small living rooms. Check the width against your space first, then the tip count, since a narrow tree has fewer branches to hang decorations on.

Slim Christmas trees: how narrow is slim

Slim, pencil, skinny and narrow describe the same shape, a tall cone with short branches. Sellers use the words loosely, so go by the width in centimetres. In the listings a slim 6ft tree is 45 to 65cm across, and a full 6ft tree takes 95 to 120cm.

6.5ft to 7ft (200 to 210cm)55 to 70cm400 to 8003.8 to 6kg

A full 6ft tree lists 550 to 1,200 tips, so a slim one has about half as many branches to hang decorations on. It is also lighter, which makes it easier to carry and store but easier to knock over. Prices run from about £15 to £71 in this collection, and half of the trees cost between £34 and £47.

Choosing a slim Christmas tree

Stability

A narrow base tips more easily than a wide one, and the lightest slim trees weigh under 2kg. Put the tree in a corner or against a wall, hang the heavier decorations low and close to the trunk, and keep it where children and pets cannot knock it.

Assembly and shaping

Slim trees come in sections, three where the listing says, on a folding metal or plastic stand. The branches are hinged or pre-attached, so they fold down for storage and drop into place with no slots to match. Shaping still takes time: one 7ft listing says to allow 45 to 60 minutes, so spread every tip before you hang anything.

Decorating a very slim tree

With 320 to 650 tips at 6ft there is less room for ornaments. Use smaller baubles, about 4 to 6cm across, a light topper and two or three colours. Wind the lights round in a spiral from the bottom. The order to follow is in how to decorate a Christmas tree.

Lit or unlit

Pre-lit slim trees carry about 180 LEDs at 6 to 6.5ft, mostly warm white. Unlit slim trees cost less and take lights you already own, and a 6ft slim tree needs a shorter string than a full one. Light counts are explained under pre-lit Christmas trees.

Colour and finish

Green is the most common finish. A few trees are black, and others are snow-flocked white, frosted, grey or gold and silver. Flocked trees can shed a little white powder, which shows on a dark floor.

If slim is not the right shape

Narrower still are the 5ft pop-up Christmas trees, 30 to 40cm wide but tinsel rather than fir-style, and the small Christmas trees of 2ft to 4ft stand on a table and take no floor space.

Fuller trees are in the main Christmas trees range, and the guide to the best artificial Christmas trees in the UK compares the types.

Frequently asked questions: Slim & Pencil Christmas Trees

What size is a slim Christmas tree?

A 6ft slim tree is 45 to 65cm across and a 7ft one 55 to 70cm, against 95 to 120cm and 115 to 132cm for full trees. Heights run from 4ft to 7ft, with a few at 6.5ft (2m). Measure the floor space as well as the ceiling height.

What are skinny Christmas trees called?

Pencil trees, slim trees, slimline trees and narrow trees all describe the same shape: a tall, narrow cone. Sellers use the words loosely, so go by the width in centimetres rather than the name.

Are slim Christmas trees any good?

They work where a full tree will not fit, such as corners, hallways and small living rooms. The trade-offs are fewer tips (about 320 to 650 at 6ft, against 550 to 1,200 for a full tree) and a narrow base that tips more easily if knocked. A corner position helps.

How do you decorate a very slim Christmas tree?

Use smaller baubles, about 4 to 6cm across, and a light topper, and keep to two or three colours so the tree does not look crowded. Hang decorations on the outer tips and spread them evenly, since the tree is seen from all sides. Wind lights round in a spiral from the bottom.

Can you buy a slim Christmas tree that is pre-lit?

Yes. The pre-lit slim trees in this collection carry about 180 LEDs at 6 to 6.5ft, mostly warm white. Unlit slim trees cost less and work with lights you already own.

Is there a 7ft slim Christmas tree?

Yes. The 7ft slim trees here are 55 to 70cm across with 625 to 800 tips in the listings that give a count, in snow-flocked, frosted or green finishes. They need a ceiling of about 2.5m to leave room for a topper.
