Christmas tree skirts: soft mat or rigid collar
A tree skirt hides the stand. Everything else about it is a choice between soft and rigid, and that choice decides how you size it.
Soft skirts and mats
Faux fur and polyester are the most common materials here, with velvet, sequin and knitted wool as alternatives. These skirts lie flat on the floor, wrap round the trunk through a slit and close with hook-and-loop or a drawstring. They fit any stand and cover the floor under the lowest branches, so a real tree’s dropped needles land on the fabric.
Baskets and collars
Wicker, rattan, woven fibre and metal collars sit around the stand rather than under the tree. They keep a clean outline and suit a natural or rustic scheme, but the stand has to fit inside. Baskets here run from 45 to 70 cm across and 20 to 30 cm tall, and some fold flat for storage.
Sizing Christmas tree skirts by tree height
For a mat, match the tree. For a basket or collar, match the stand: measure it across the widest point of its feet and compare that with the inner opening in the listing.
| Tree | Mat diameter | Sizes sold here |
|---|---|---|
| Table-top or slim, under 4ft | 40 to 61 cm | 40 cm mats and 61 cm collars |
| 4ft (122 cm) | 61 to 78 cm | 61 cm collars and 78 cm mats |
| 5ft to 6ft (152 to 183 cm) | 78 to 90 cm | 78 cm and 90 cm (36 in) mats |
| 7ft to 8ft (213 to 244 cm) | 90 to 122 cm | 90 cm and 122 cm (48 in) mats |
Baskets are sold for trees up to about 7ft in the listings here, at 57 to 66 cm across the base. A rigid skirt only works if the stand fits inside it, and if you have not chosen a stand yet, see Christmas tree stands.
Practical checks before you buy
- Real tree: choose a skirt you can lift or move, so you can reach the water bowl every day.
- Lights: keep the plug, any extension lead and the controller box uncovered, so you can reach the switch.
- Colour: white is the most common here, then gold, brown, grey and red. Wicker comes in natural, grey wash or white wash.
- Slim tree: pick a mat of 40 to 61 cm, because anything much wider looks oversized beside a narrow base. See slim Christmas trees for trees that need one.
The skirt is the last layer of the tree, after the lights and baubles. How to decorate a Christmas tree gives the full order, and Christmas tree decorations covers the baubles and toppers that go with it.
Frequently asked questions: Christmas Tree Skirts
What size skirt for a 7ft Christmas tree?
A soft mat of 90 to 122 cm covers the stand and the floor under the lowest branches. A basket or collar needs an opening wider than your stand, and baskets here are 57 to 66 cm across the base. Measure the stand before you choose.
What can I use instead of a Christmas tree skirt?
A wicker basket or metal collar round the stand, a folded blanket or faux-fur throw spread on the floor, or a wooden crate that hides the base all work. Wrapped presents stacked round the trunk also hide a stand. Keep the plug and any controller box uncovered.
Is a wicker skirt better than a fabric one?
Neither is better, because they do different jobs. A wicker basket keeps a clean outline and suits a natural scheme, but the stand must fit inside it. A fabric mat adapts to any stand and covers more floor, and a real tree’s needles land on it.
What size skirt do I need for a slim tree?
A mat of 40 to 61 cm, because a slim tree has a narrow base. The listings here include 40 cm mats made for mini and pencil trees, and 61 cm collars made for small trees. Anything much wider looks oversized.
Can I make my own Christmas tree skirt?
Yes. Cut a circle of felt or fabric 90 cm across for a 6ft tree, cut a slit from the edge to the centre, and cut a small hole in the middle for the trunk. Felt does not fray, and a strip of hook-and-loop tape or a few ties will close the slit. A faux-fur throw or a blanket also works with no sewing.
