Christmas garlands with lights

Garlands with an LED string already wired into the greenery, from 1 m to 5 m long, so there is nothing to untangle on the mantelpiece or banister. Check the power source first: most take 3 AA batteries, and a few plug in. Then compare LEDs per metre, which runs from about 10 to 28 in the listings. Most garlands cost between £12 and £30.

Christmas garland with lights: what to compare

Length and LED count decide how a garland with lights looks. The listings run from about 10 to 28 LEDs per metre, so a 2.7 m garland with 30 LEDs is much sparser than a 1.8 m garland with 50.

The LED string is wired into the branches, so the garland hangs and lights up in one go. Most in the listings are artificial pine or fir in PVC or polyethylene (PE), in 1.8 m (6 ft) or 2.7 m (9 ft) lengths, with a few at 1 m, 3.6 m and 5 m. Most cost between £12 and £30, and the median is about £25.

Battery or plug-in lights

Battery garlands take 3 AA batteries in a small pack, and many add a timer or a remote. They hang anywhere, but you have to hide the pack at one end and swap the batteries when the light fades. A few garlands are corded and plug in: they never dim as batteries drain, but they need a socket within reach of the lead.

Length and LED count

LengthWhere it fitsLEDs in the listings
1 mShelf or table centre10
1.8 m (6 ft) to 2 mMantelpiece or top of a door20 to 50
2.7 m (9 ft)Long mantelpiece or short banister30 to 50
3.6 m (12 ft)Banister52
5 m (16.4 ft)Door frame or long banister100

For a mantelpiece, choose a garland longer than the mantel so it can sag in a curve. A 1.8 m garland on a 1.2 m mantel leaves about 30 cm of spare length at each end, and a 2.7 m one gives deep swags.

Fitting a Christmas garland with lights safely

  • Switch the lights off when you go to bed or leave the house. A timer does it for you.
  • Keep every garland, lit or not, away from candles, open fires and heaters. LEDs stay much cooler than old filament bulbs, but the greenery is still plastic.
  • Use a garland outdoors only if the listing says outdoor. Several are listed for indoor use only.
  • Do not run a lead across a step or doorway where someone could trip over it.

Fix a garland with the ties supplied, florist wire or small removable hooks every 50 cm or so, and leave the battery pack where you can reach it without taking everything down.

Christmas garlands with lights or plain greenery

A plain garland lets you choose the light colour and spacing yourself, usually with fairy lights wound through it: see Christmas garlands. For a long banister, Christmas garlands for stairs covers lengths and fixings, and the whole range sits under wreaths and garlands.

Frequently asked questions: Pre-lit Christmas Garlands

What is the best Christmas garland with lights?

It depends on where it goes. For a mantelpiece, a 1.8 m or 2.7 m garland with 30 to 50 LEDs and a timer is enough; for a banister, choose the length first and the lights second. The garlands in this collection average about 4.4 out of 5 on Amazon, so read the reviews for how full each one looks once shaped.

How do I hang a Christmas garland with lights?

On a mantelpiece, lay it along the front and let the ends drop evenly, with the battery pack hidden behind an ornament. On a banister or door frame, fix it every 50 cm or so with the ties supplied, florist wire or removable hooks. Fit the batteries before you hang it, so you can check that every LED lights up.

How can I make a garland look expensive?

Fullness does most of the work. Pull each branch apart and bend the tips outwards until the wire core is hidden, then add ribbon bows or a few baubles in one or two colours. Polyethylene (PE) tips, which listings call real touch or soft touch, usually look more natural than flat PVC needles.

What is the most realistic-looking faux garland?

Look for polyethylene tips, mixed branch shapes such as Norfolk pine, and a stated width, since a thin garland looks sparse once it is draped. Customer photos of the garland hanging in a home say more than the product shots.

Can I use a Christmas garland with lights outdoors?

Only if the listing says outdoor use. Several are listed for indoor use only, and the battery pack is usually the weak point in rain. A porch or covered doorway is a safer spot than an open gate or fence.
