Christmas tree toppers: star, angel or glass finial
The top of a tree is its slimmest section, so a topper has to be chosen for weight as well as for looks. The weights in this range run from 10 g for a mini star to about 390 g for an animated angel, and most stars sit between 40 g and 160 g.
Stars
Stars are most of the range here: glitter plastic, hollow metal and wire frames, and light-up versions. They are the lightest option, which suits slim Christmas trees as well as full ones.
Angels
Angels are the traditional alternative, and there are fewer of them. At around 30 cm tall in white, silver or diamante, they are wider and heavier than a star, so they need a firm top branch.
Glass finials
A finial is a pointed glass spike of 26 to 31 cm that slips over the top branch. It is light, but it breaks if the tree is knocked, so it suits a tree out of reach of children and pets.
How to choose Christmas tree toppers
| Tree height | Topper height | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Table-top, under 3ft | 6 to 10 cm | Mini stars, often sold as a pair |
| 4ft (122 cm) | 15 to 20 cm | A light star or a small angel |
| 5ft (152 cm) | 18 to 25 cm | Stars of 20 cm are common |
| 6ft (183 cm) | 20 to 30 cm | Star, angel or finial |
| 7ft (213 cm) | 25 to 31 cm | Larger stars and glass finials |
| 8ft (244 cm) | 30 to 35 cm | Large light-up stars and animated angels |
These are starting points taken from the sizes sold here, so check the listing’s height against your tree.
Fittings
Three fittings are common: a hollow base that slides over the top branch, a spring frame or spiral cone that pushes into the tip, and a glass spike that slips on like a sleeve. If a topper leans, tie it to the upper branches with ribbon or a twist tie.
Light-up toppers
The light-up toppers here run on batteries, and one animated angel can also plug in. Some have a timer or a remote. Check whether batteries are included, because some listings say they are not.
Colour and finish
Gold, silver and champagne are the most common colours here. Match the metal to the Christmas baubles on the tree, and the white of a light-up topper to the white of the tree lights.
What to use instead of a topper
A topper is optional. A large ribbon bow, a bunch of picks or feathers, or a cluster of three baubles on the top branch fills the same spot. Our guide to Christmas tree topper ideas compares star, angel, bow and other options, and how to decorate a Christmas tree shows where the topper fits in the order of work.
Toppers sit in the Christmas tree decorations range alongside baubles and skirts.
Frequently asked questions: Christmas Tree Toppers
What is the most popular Christmas tree topper?
Stars and angels are the two classics, and stars are searched for more often than angels in the UK. Stars are also most of the range here, because they are light, easy to fit and suit any tree height. Angels are the traditional alternative.
What is the best topper for a Christmas tree?
The best one suits the tree’s height and top branch: 20 to 30 cm for a 6ft tree, a light star for a slim or pop-up tree, and an angel only if the top branch is firm. Check the fitting and the weight before the style. A topper that leans on a thin tip is better swapped for a lighter one.
What can I use instead of a Christmas tree topper?
A large ribbon bow, a bunch of picks or feathers, or a cluster of three baubles on the top branch all fill the spot. A bow with long tails that drape down the branches looks finished without adding weight. Our topper ideas guide shows more options.
Are light-up Christmas tree toppers battery powered?
In this collection they run on batteries, and one animated angel can also plug in. Some have a timer or a remote. Check whether batteries are included, because some listings say they are not.
How do you attach a topper to a Christmas tree?
A hollow base slides over the top branch, a spring frame or spiral cone pushes into the tip, and a glass finial slips on like a sleeve. If the topper leans, tie it to the upper branches with ribbon or a twist tie.
