Christmas window lights: curtain, star and silhouette sets
A window set is bought by the size of the glass, not by the bulb count. Three formats cover most windows, and each fixes to the glass or the frame in its own way.
Curtain lights
A row of drops hangs from one top cable. The sizes in this collection are 2 m by 2 m (about 200 LEDs), 3 m by 3 m (300 LEDs) and 3.6 m by 3 m (360 LEDs). The drops have a fixed length, so a 3 m curtain on a window 1.2 m tall pools on the sill or hangs past it. Curtain lights suit tall windows, patio doors, bays and plain walls.
Stars and snowflakes
Shapes from 20 cm to 90 cm hang from suction cups or hooks. Most run on batteries and many have a timer, so no cable has to reach the socket. Some come in packs of two or three, for a row along a wide sill.
Silhouette sets
A silhouette is a flat outline of a tree, reindeer, bell or Santa, around 40 cm tall. These sets cost more than curtain lights or single stars.
How to choose Christmas window lights
Measure the glass first, then match it to a format.
| Your glass | Format to look for | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 m wide | Star, snowflake or silhouette | One shape of 20 to 40 cm, or a pair |
| 1.2 m square | A string round the frame, or a shape | 3.6 m for the top and both sides, 4.8 m for the full frame |
| Patio door, bay or tall window | Curtain lights | 2 m or 3 m square |
Check the lead as well as the lights: the unlit cable has to reach a socket. With no socket nearby, choose battery lights, or USB lights with an adapter in the box.
Fixing and powering window lights
- Hang curtain lights from clear adhesive hooks on the frame or a curtain pole. Nails and staples can pierce the cable.
- Wipe the glass before pressing on a suction cup, and check the weight of the light against the cup’s limit. Press on the flat of the pane, not on the frame.
- Most sets here are warm white, which reads as candlelight from the street. Multicolour sets are fewer.
- More than half of the listings include a timer, so the lights switch off on their own.
- Around half mention outdoor use. For the outside of the glass or a porch, look for an IP rating of IP44 or higher.
Frames, stickers and paper cut-outs are covered in our Christmas window decorating ideas, and paper snowflakes are a cheap addition to a lit window. A string of fairy lights round the frame finishes the edge. For lights that go on the outside, see outdoor Christmas lights, or browse the wider Christmas lights range.
Frequently asked questions: Christmas Window Lights
How do you put Christmas lights around a window?
Measure the frame first. The top and both sides take the width plus twice the height, and the full frame takes twice the width plus twice the height. A window 120 cm square needs 3.6 m for the top and sides and 4.8 m for the full frame. Fix the string to the frame with clear adhesive hooks rather than to the glass.
Can you run Christmas lights through a window?
Many people run an outdoor-rated string in through a gap and keep the plug indoors. Do not let the window close on the cable, because a pinched cable can be damaged, which is a safety risk. Battery or USB lights avoid the problem.
What are the best window lights for Christmas?
It depends on the glass. Curtain lights in warm white suit tall windows and patio doors, a star or snowflake suits a small window, and silhouettes of a tree or reindeer give a clear outline from the street. Check the size against your window before the style.
Can Christmas window lights be used outside?
Some can. Around half of the listings here mention outdoor use, and some give an IP44 or IP65 rating. A set sold for indoor use should stay behind the glass, and any plug or battery box should stay dry.
What size curtain lights do I need for a window?
Match the width of the glass and check the drop. The sizes here are 2 m by 2 m, 3 m by 3 m and 3.6 m by 3 m. If the drop is longer than the window is tall, the extra hangs below the sill, so a string round the frame or a shape is neater on a small window.
