Advent candles: tapers, pillars and wreath rings
Two different things are sold as Advent candles. One is the church-style set of four or five candles for a wreath, lit one more each Sunday. The other is a single tall candle to burn a little each day through December, usually printed with the dates. Both kinds are in the grid, along with wreath rings and holders to stand the candles in.
Prices run from £5 to £58, with a median of about £17. Wax sets sit at the low end and a porcelain wreath at the top. The main Christmas candles page covers scented and LED candles, and Advent calendars is the place for 24 doors and a small gift each day.
Candle colours
The traditional set is three purple candles and one pink, with an optional white candle for the centre of the wreath. Purple is the main colour of the season and is used for the first, second and fourth Sundays; pink is for the third. Red sets are common too and suit a table, though they do not follow the church colours.
Sizes and shapes
| Type | Size in the grid | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Taper sets of 4 to 6 | 24 to 30 cm tall, 19 to 25 mm thick | Purple, pink and white; they need a ring or holders |
| Pillar sets | 6 to 15 cm tall, 5 to 8 cm wide | Stand on a plate with no holder; some are stepped in four heights |
| Wreath rings and holders | 15 to 28 cm across | Brass, pine, resin or porcelain; the candles are sold separately |
| LED sets | Short pillars, about 8 cm tall | Purple and pink, battery powered, with a timer |
Measure the socket before you buy candles. The tapers here are 19 to 25 mm (¾ to 1 inch) thick, so a candle that is too thin wobbles in the ring and one that is too thick will not go in.
Wreaths, rings and LED sets
Rings and wreaths run from about 15 to 28 cm across. A brass ring or a porcelain wreath is the one to keep for years, because only the candles are used up. If a wreath has real greenery, it dries out as December goes on, so keep the flames clear of the needles. Battery LED sets in purple and pink, with a timer, remove that risk, and the LED candles page explains the remotes and batteries.
For the history behind the wreath and other customs, see traditional British Christmas decorations.
Lighting Advent candles in 2026
Advent starts on Sunday 29 November 2026, and the four Sundays are 29 November, 6, 13 and 20 December. Light one candle on the first Sunday and add one more each week, so that all four burn on the last Sunday, with the white candle for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. The guide on how to use an Advent wreath covers the order, the colours and what each candle means.
Numbered daily candles start on 1 December. Burn each one down to the next number, then put it out.
Burning Advent candles safely
- Never leave burning candles alone, and put them out before you leave the room or go to bed.
- Keep the flames clear of greenery, ribbon and paper, and out of draughts.
- Stand the wreath on a heatproof tray or plate, away from curtains and not under a shelf.
- Put each candle out before it burns down to the holder.
Frequently asked questions: Advent Candles & Wreaths
Are there four or five candles in an Advent wreath?
Four, one for each Sunday of Advent, plus an optional fifth white candle in the centre for Christmas Day. The four are traditionally three purple and one pink. Sets in this collection come with four, five or six candles, so check the colours listed before you buy.
What colour candle is lit each week of Advent?
In the usual pattern the first, second and fourth Sundays use purple and the third uses pink. A white candle, if there is one, is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Some churches use blue instead of purple, and many homes use red or white, which is fine for a wreath at home.
Why is one Advent candle pink and three purple?
Purple is the main colour of the season. The pink candle is lit on the third Sunday, known as Gaudete Sunday, a Sunday of joy about halfway through Advent. In 2026 that is 13 December.
What is the correct order to light Advent candles?
Light one candle on the first Sunday of Advent and add one more each Sunday, so that all four burn on the fourth Sunday. In the common order that is purple, purple, pink, purple. In 2026 the Sundays are 29 November, 6, 13 and 20 December.
What do the four Advent candles mean?
Meanings differ between churches. A common set is hope, peace, joy and love, in that order, and others name the candles for the prophets, Bethlehem, the shepherds and the angels. The white centre candle stands for Christ.
Are there electric Advent candles?
Yes. Battery LED sets in purple and pink, with a timer, are in this collection. They suit a dry greenery wreath or a home with young children or pets, because there is no flame.
