Scented Christmas candles: jars, tins and wax melts
Size decides how long a scented candle lasts, and the scent name decides whether it smells like Christmas. The grid has large jars of about 10 x 17 cm, boxes of 6 to 12 small tins 5 to 6 cm wide, and wax melts for a burner. The main Christmas candles page compares scented, Advent and LED candles side by side.
| Format | Size | Burn time quoted in listings | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large jar | 10 x 17 cm | Up to 150 hours | One room, all season |
| Small tins, boxes of 6 to 12 | 5 to 6 cm wide | About 20 hours a tin | Bedrooms, gifts, trying several scents |
| Wax melts | Packs of 50 to 110 g | Depends on the burner | Kitchen or hall, in a burner |
Scented Christmas candles by scent family
The scent name is the first thing to read. Most Christmas scents fall into five families.
- Spice: cinnamon stick, cinnamon chai and nutmeg.
- Citrus: orange, often spiced or paired with cinnamon.
- Baking: gingerbread, and apple with cinnamon.
- Evergreen: balsam fir, pine and forest, the closest to a real tree.
- Woody and amber: white cedar, soft amber and dark fruit, with a deeper, less sweet smell.
Read the scent list on multipacks. Some boxes sold as Christmas candles mix in lavender, rose, strawberry and lemon, which smell pleasant but not festive.
Wax and container
The wax types in the listings are soy, plant-based vegetable wax and paraffin, which comes from petroleum. Some listings say only “wax”, which tells you nothing. Glass jars suit one fixed spot, tins are lighter and travel well, and a wooden wick, found on one jar here, crackles as it burns.
Scented Christmas candles: cost per hour and care
Price per candle misleads, so divide by the hours quoted. A £20 jar quoted at 150 hours costs 13p an hour. A £15 box of 12 tins quoted at 240 hours in total costs about 6p an hour. Quoted hours are the maker’s best case, so use them to compare and not to promise.
Burning a scented candle well
- Let the first burn last until the melted wax reaches the edge of the jar, or the candle tunnels down the middle.
- Trim the wick to about 5 mm before every burn.
- Burn it for a few hours at a time; labels usually set a limit of about four hours.
- Put the lid back on when it is out, to keep the scent in.
- Never leave a lit candle alone, and keep it away from the tree, curtains, children and pets. Where that is hard, LED candles give the glow without the scent.
Wax melts and gifts
Wax melts have no wick: a burner warms them, either electric or a tea light burner. A burner is not always included, so check the listing before you order. Wax melts and some single candles cost under £10, which suits a Secret Santa limit; see Secret Santa gifts under £10.
Boxes of small tins double as presents, because many mix several scents. Christmas gifts for mum has other ideas to pair with them.
Frequently asked questions: Scented Christmas Candles & Wax Melts
What is the best Christmas scented candle?
There is no single best, because scent is personal, but size and wax decide the rest. A large jar gives the longest burn from one candle, and a box of small tins gives several scents in one purchase. Choose the scent family first: spice, citrus, baking, evergreen or woody.
How do I make my house smell Christmassy?
Light a spice, orange or fir candle, or warm wax melts in a burner, shortly before guests arrive. A pan of water with orange slices, a cinnamon stick and cloves on the lowest heat scents a kitchen without a candle. Keep the water topped up and never leave the pan or a lit candle alone.
Which Christmas candle smells like a Christmas tree?
Look for balsam fir, fir, pine or forest in the scent name. Blends that add cinnamon, orange or amber smell more like a festive room than a tree, so choose a plain fir or pine for the tree smell. On a multipack, check that a fir or pine scent is among the six or twelve.
What does a gingerbread candle smell like?
Gingerbread scents mix ginger and cinnamon with vanilla or brown sugar, so they smell of a bakery rather than a pine forest. They belong to the baking family, alongside vanilla and apple and cinnamon blends.
Do wax melts need an electric burner?
Wax melts have no wick, so they need a burner to warm them. An electric burner heats a dish with no flame, and a tea light burner uses a small flame underneath. A burner is not always included, so check the listing if you want to give wax melts as a present.
