LED candles: pillars and tea lights
An LED candle is a small bulb with a flicker circuit inside a candle-shaped shell, run on batteries, so there is no flame, no drip and no smoke. The grid splits between sets of two to five pillars with a remote and tea lights in packs of 12 to 50. Prices run from £5 to £20, with a median of £12.
| Format | Typical size | Pack | Power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pillars | About 7.5 cm wide, 10 to 17 cm tall | 2 to 5 | Batteries, with a remote and timer on most |
| Tea lights | 3 to 4 cm across | 12 to 50 | Button cells, often with a push switch |
Shell, flame and colour
Most shells are plastic or polypropylene, and a few are real wax or glass. A real wax shell looks and feels closer to a poured candle. The colours listed are mostly ivory, cream, warm white and warm yellow, which is the tone of a candle flame. Listings call the movement “flickering” or “moving flame”, and the moving type sways, which looks more convincing across a room.
Remote, timer and batteries
Most pillar sets have a remote with a timer and a dimmer. An infrared remote has to point at the candle, while a radio (RF) remote works from another room or around a corner. Several sets list a remote and a manual but no batteries, so check what is in the box.
Tea lights usually run on button cells, and one listing quotes 200 hours on a fresh set, which is about a month at six hours a night. Take the batteries out before you pack the candles away for the year, because a leaking cell can ruin a set. Keep tea lights and their button cells away from young children.
LED candles for windows, mantelpieces and the garden
With no flame, LED candles can stand where a real one is a risk: a windowsill beside curtains, a mantelpiece among garlands, a shelf with stockings. A set of three in different heights, such as 10, 12.5 and 15 cm, looks more natural than three the same size. The guides to Christmas window decorating ideas and Christmas table setting ideas show them in place.
Most sets are for dry indoor use. Only a few say waterproof or outdoor in the listing, so look for those words and keep every other set under cover. Tea lights of 3 to 4 cm are close to the size of a standard tea light, which suits jars and lanterns, but check the holder’s width first.
Light, not scent
LED candles give no scent. For a festive smell beside them, see scented Christmas candles and wax melts. LED Advent sets in purple and pink are on the Advent candles page, and the main Christmas candles page compares all the kinds.
Frequently asked questions: LED & Flameless Candles
Are LED candles any good?
They do one job well: give a candle glow where a real flame is a risk, such as a windowsill with curtains, a shelf under a garland, or a table with children or pets. They give no scent and very little heat. Warm white light, a flicker setting and a real wax or glass shell make them look closer to the real thing.
How long can LED candles stay on?
It depends on the batteries and the brightness. One tea light listing quotes 200 hours on a fresh set of button cells, which is about a month at six hours a night. A timer switches pillar sets off for you, and a dimmer glow is the sign to change the batteries.
Is it safe to leave LED candles on?
With no flame, the main fire risk of a wax candle is gone. They are still electrical items, so use the batteries named in the instructions, replace all of them together, and use the timer or switch them off when you leave the house or go to bed. Keep tea lights and their button cells away from young children.
How does an LED candle work?
A small LED sits inside a candle-shaped shell and runs on batteries. A flicker circuit varies the brightness so the light looks like a flame, and some sets add a flame-shaped piece that sways. A remote or a push switch turns it on, and many sets add a timer and a dimmer.
What is the most realistic flameless candle?
Look for four things: a warm white or ivory light, a moving or flickering flame, a shell of real wax or glass, and a dimmer on the remote. Grouping three candles of different heights, such as 10, 12.5 and 15 cm, looks more natural than one on its own.
How much are LED candles?
In this collection prices run from £5 to £20, and the median is £12. Tea light packs mostly sit at the low end, and sets of three or five pillars with a remote, a timer and a real wax or glass shell at the top. Check that batteries are included, because several sets list a remote and a manual but no cells.
