Naughty Elf on the Shelf ideas: mischief that is easy to clean up
Cheeky elf scenes the children will laugh at and you can undo before breakfast: 30 ideas sorted by mess, the pranks worth skipping and a night-by-night plan for December.

A naughty elf is the Elf on the Shelf caught doing what a child would be told off for: raiding the advent calendar, toilet-rolling the tree, holding a teddy to ransom. The official brand describes its Scout Elves as “always nice and never naughty”, so the mischief is a family invention, and the adult who sets the scene at 11pm is the one who clears it before school. These 30 naughty elf ideas are sorted by how long they take to undo, followed by the pranks to skip and a plan for the 24 mornings of December.
How the ideas are sorted
- No messeverything goes back in under 2 minutes
- Low messone wipe, one hoover pass or one roll to wind back up
- Containedthe mess stays on a tray, in the sink or in an empty bath
Setup times assume the props are already in a box (see the mischief box further down). Most scenes use things you already own, and none needs glue, paint or permanent marker.
No-mess naughty elf ideas for school nights
These take five minutes or less to set up and leave nothing to clean. Use them from Sunday to Thursday night, when breakfast is a rush. For more two-minute setups, see our easy Elf on the Shelf ideas.
| Idea | What you need | The scene |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Teddy ransom | A soft toy, string, a note | The elf has tied up a favourite teddy. The note asks for one carrot by the back door before it is released. |
| 2. Advent calendar raid | Yesterday’s empty wrapper | The elf sits on the calendar holding an empty wrapper. Use one from a door already opened, so tomorrow’s chocolate is still there. |
| 3. Pants on the tree | Clean socks and pants | Underwear hung on the branches like baubles. Everything goes back in the drawer. |
| 4. Superhero arrest | Action figures, string | The elf is surrounded by toy superheroes, or tied up by a toy villain. |
| 5. Getaway car | A toy truck or a slipper | The elf drives off with a stolen sweet in the back. |
| 6. Selfie spree | An old phone or a tablet | Twenty elf selfies in the camera roll, found at breakfast and deleted in seconds. |
| 7. Photo bomb | A printed elf face, masking tape | The elf’s face taped over a face in a framed family photo. |
| 8. Chilling in the fridge | A paper sign | The elf sits next to the milk with a sign: “Do not disturb, chilling”. |
| 9. Cereal swimming pool | A bowl of dry cereal | The elf does backstroke in the breakfast bowl. Add milk and breakfast is ready. |
| 10. Sticky-note door | A pad of sticky notes | A bedroom door covered in sticky notes, one of them signed “Elf was here”. |
Low-mess ideas: one wipe or one hoover
These look like real chaos but take about five minutes to put right, often with the children helping. Keep them for mornings when you have ten minutes spare.
| Idea | The scene | Clean-up |
|---|---|---|
| 11. Toilet-roll tree | One roll wound loosely round the tree, the elf at the top holding the end | Wind it back on the tube; it still goes back in the bathroom |
| 12. Fairy-light lasso | Toys tied together with a string of battery fairy lights, switched off | Untie and put the lights back in the box |
| 13. Snowball fight | Elf versus teddies with cotton wool balls or pom-poms | Scoop everything into a bowl |
| 14. Googly-eye invasion | Eyes stuck on the fruit bowl, the egg box and the milk | Peel off; use large eyes if you have a toddler |
| 15. Egg graffiti | Faces drawn on the eggs with a washable pen | None: the eggs still get eaten |
| 16. Tin-foil shoes | School shoes wrapped in foil, with a note: “I polished them” | Unwrap and keep the foil for another scene |
| 17. Zip wire | String between two chairs or down the banister, the elf hanging from a candy cane | Take the string down as soon as the children have seen it |
| 18. Mirror message | “Elf rules” written on the bathroom mirror with a dry-wipe marker | One wipe with a dry cloth |
| 19. Marshmallow bath | The elf up to its neck in a mug of dry mini marshmallows | None: they go into the hot chocolate |
| 20. Gone fishing | The elf fishing in a bowl of jelly sweets with a pencil and string | Sweets back in the bag |
Messy naughty elf ideas you can contain
Flour, foam and toy-filled baths are the scenes children remember. The trick is to stage them on a surface that is quick to clear: a baking tray, the draining board or an empty bath. Save these for Friday and Saturday nights.
| Idea | Stage it on | The scene |
|---|---|---|
| 21. Flour snow angel | A baking tray | The elf lies in a thin layer of flour with its arms spread. Bin the flour, wash the tray. |
| 22. Sprinkles heist | A plate | The elf caught with a tub of sprinkles tipped over the biscuits. |
| 23. Melted snowman | The draining board | A glass of water, a carrot, two buttons and a scarf: the snowman the elf built has melted. |
| 24. Shaving-foam ski run | An empty bath | A slope of foam with the elf on lolly-stick skis. Rinse the bath with the shower head. |
| 25. Bath party | An empty bath | Every rubber duck and soft toy in the house, with the elf as DJ. No water involved. |
| 26. Pom-pom ball pit | A mixing bowl | The elf diving head first into a bowl of craft pom-poms. |
| 27. Toilet-roll snowman | The bathroom floor | Three rolls stacked and given a face, the elf still holding the pens. |
| 28. Blanket fort | The sofa | Cushions and blankets built into a fort, the elf on guard at the door. The children help take it down. |
| 29. Paper-chain prison | A doorway | The teddies locked behind paper chains. The chains go on the tree afterwards. |
| 30. Elf café | A tray | Mugs, marshmallows and a menu: the elf has opened a hot chocolate café before breakfast. |
Naughty elf pranks to skip, and what to do instead
Some of the pranks that do the rounds online cost more than they give back: they leave a stain, upset a child or bring a safety risk.
| Prank | The problem | Easier swap |
|---|---|---|
| Flour or glitter on the carpet | Glitter stays in carpet fibres for weeks | Flour on a baking tray (idea 21) |
| Cling film over the toilet | A wet floor to mop and a cross child at 7am | Fishing in a bowl of sweets (idea 20) |
| Toothpaste messages on the mirror | Dries hard and smears | Dry-wipe marker (idea 18) |
| Toasting marshmallows over a tealight | A live flame next to a fabric toy | An LED tealight in the scene |
| Eating tomorrow’s advent chocolate | The child loses a treat and the elf turns into a bully | An empty wrapper from yesterday (idea 2) |
| A favourite soft toy in the blender or the bin | Younger children can be upset for real | The teddy ransom (idea 1) |
| Ketchup “target practice” on the wall | Stains paint and grout | Cotton wool snowball fight (idea 13) |
| Small props within reach of under-3s | Googly eyes, beads and button batteries can be swallowed | Large props, scene on a high shelf |
Plan December 2026 so the mess lands on weekends
The official Elf on the Shelf FAQ says Scout Elves usually arrive at the start of a family’s Christmas celebrations and fly back to the North Pole with Santa on Christmas Eve. If yours turns up on Tuesday 1 December 2026 and leaves on Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December, that is 24 mornings to fill. The Friday and Saturday nights, with no school the next morning, fall on 4 and 5, 11 and 12, then 18 and 19 December. Once school breaks up for Christmas, every night is free for a messier scene.
| Night | Type of scene | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Monday 30 November | Arrival | The elf turns up tangled in battery fairy lights |
| Sunday to Thursday nights | No mess | Teddy ransom, fridge, cereal pool |
| Friday 4 and Saturday 5 December | Low mess | Toilet-roll tree, snowball fight |
| Friday 11 and Saturday 12 December | Contained | Flour snow angel, bath party |
| Friday 18 and Saturday 19 December | Biggest scene of the month | Blanket fort or shaving-foam ski run |
| Wednesday 23 December | Last scene | The elf packs a tiny bag and leaves a goodbye note |
If the elf is new to your house this year, the Kids & Elf collection groups elf accessories, Christmas Eve boxes and gingerbread house kits in one place.

Does a naughty elf break the Elf on the Shelf rules?
No. The tradition comes from the 2005 book by Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell. Its one firm rule is for the children, not the elf: they must not touch it, or it may lose some of its Christmas magic. The rest of the story happens at night: the elf flies to the North Pole to report to Santa, then lands in a new spot before morning. A scene that happened overnight fits both. Our guide to the Elf on the Shelf rules covers what to tell children.
The catch is that a naughty elf ends up doing the very things children get told off for. To keep the balance, have the elf leave an apology note the morning after a big scene, or swap a naughty night for a kind one, such as a note asking the children to choose a toy to give away.

- The elf sits on the printer with a sign: “Out of order, elf on strike”.
- The elf guards the biscuit tin with a tally of who has had the most.
- In a home without children: the elf asleep in the wine rack, or the TV remote hidden in the fridge.
Office scenes follow the same rule as the ones at home: harmless, and undone before the first meeting. For the rest of the season, from Christmas Eve boxes to gingerbread kits, browse the Kids & Elf range.
Frequently asked questions
What are the three rules of Elf on the Shelf?
The official tradition has one firm rule for children: do not touch the elf, or it may lose some of its Christmas magic. The other two parts of the routine come from the story: each night the elf flies to the North Pole to tell Santa how the day went, and when it comes back it lands somewhere new for the children to find.
What does 67 mean on the Elf on the Shelf?
It comes from the 6-7 craze, a sound bite from a viral video that became an inside joke among children and teenagers. The phrase has no real meaning, which is the joke. The official Elf on the Shelf blog suggests playing along, for example with the elf holding a 6 and a 7 made from pipe cleaners.
What are some naughty elf names?
Go for names that hint at trouble: Mischief McTwinkle, Sir Sneaks-a-Lot, Crumble, Twizzle or Bandit. Choose one the children can say and spell, because it will sign every note the elf leaves.
What are some ideas for an adult Elf on the Shelf?
Aim the mischief at grown-up habits: the elf hides the TV remote, steals the last mince pie or covers a desk in tin foil. In an office, keep every scene harmless and quick to undo, since colleagues need their desks back by 9am.
What are quick naughty elf ideas for when you forgot to move it?
Hang the elf upside down from a branch with a sign saying it fell asleep on duty, sit it in the fridge, or prop it next to the advent calendar with an empty wrapper. Each takes under a minute and leaves nothing to clean.
What are some good naughty elf arrival ideas?
Let the elf arrive already in trouble: tangled in battery fairy lights, wedged in the letterbox with a luggage label, or sitting in the fruit bowl with googly eyes on the satsumas. Add a short note explaining the rules, and plan the arrival for the morning of 1 December.
What happens if a child touches the elf?
The official Elf on the Shelf blog suggests three remedies: the child writes Santa a letter to say sorry, someone sprinkles a little cinnamon near the elf (not on it), or the family sings a Christmas song together. When the elf turns up in a new spot the next morning, the children know it has recovered.
