Elf on the Shelf

Elf on the Shelf rules: how it works and what to tell your kids

What Elf on the Shelf is, the three core rules and the house rules families add, what to do when the elf gets touched, the 2026 dates and what to say when the questions start.

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas tradition in which a toy elf, sent by Santa, watches the household by day, flies to the North Pole each night to report back and turns up in a new place every morning. This guide covers the official rules, how it works night by night, what to tell children when they ask, and when to start and stop. Elf props, Christmas Eve boxes and gingerbread kits for the same weeks are in our Kids & Elf collection.

What is Elf on the Shelf?

It started as a book. The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition was published in 2005 by Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell, from a family tradition of an elf sent by Santa to watch over the children; Coë Steinwart drew the pictures. The official box set pairs the rhyming book with a Scout Elf doll, and more than 22.5 million of the dolls had been sold by 2023.

The family adopts the elf and the children name it, which in the story gives it its Christmas magic. Elves come as boys and girls, in different skin tones. The point, in the book, is behaviour: the elf tells Santa who has been naughty or nice. The fun, for children, is the hunt for the elf each morning.

The Elf on the Shelf rules

Three rules do most of the work. The first and third come from the official Elf on the Shelf site, the second from Taste of Home’s guide. Below them are the house rules worth adding, one set for the children and one for the grown-ups.

Rule 1: don’t touch the elf

The official site says Christmas magic is fragile and a touched elf may lose it. Accidents happen, so the site also gives ways to help the elf get its magic back, listed further down.

Rule 2: the elf never speaks or moves while the children are awake

That is how Taste of Home’s guide puts it. The elf still reports every night: the official site says it tells Santa mostly about the kind and helpful things the family does.

Rule 3: the elf goes home on Christmas Eve

Every Scout Elf returns to the North Pole with Santa on Christmas Eve and stays there until the next season.

House rules for the children

  • The elf never moves while anyone in the house is awake.
  • It flies off every night and lands somewhere new by morning.
  • Our suggestion: the elf never goes into bathrooms or bedrooms, which settles the “is it watching me?” worry before it starts.

Elf on the Shelf rules for the grown-ups

  • Move it every night, after the children are asleep. A phone reminder at 10pm saves the morning panic.
  • Never get caught: set up the scene, then check it from the doorway in the dark.
  • Keep mischief harmless and quick to undo before school.
  • Have a cover story ready for the night you forget, such as a snowstorm at the North Pole that grounded all elf flights.

How does Elf on the Shelf work, night by night?

The routine is the same from the first morning to Christmas Eve.

WhenWhat the story saysWhat the parent does
DaytimeThe elf sits still, watches and listensNothing: leave it where it landed
BedtimeChildren can whisper news or wishes for SantaListen in: it is useful for the Christmas list
NightThe elf flies to the North Pole to report to SantaOnce the house is asleep, move the elf to a new spot
MorningThe elf is back, somewhere newLet the children hunt for it before breakfast
Christmas EveThe elf leaves with SantaPut the elf away and leave a goodbye note

For a different set-up every night, our list of 100 Elf on the Shelf ideas runs from 1 to 24 December.

Can you touch the Elf on the Shelf?

Nobody is supposed to, adults included. Accidents still happen: the elf falls off the shelf, the dog picks it up, a toddler hugs it. The official site suggests three ways to help a touched elf get its magic back:

  1. A note to the elf or to Santa saying sorry, which the site calls the most effective.
  2. A little cinnamon sprinkled next to the elf: the site says cinnamon is like vitamins for an elf.
  3. A Christmas carol sung together as a family.

The next morning the elf is somewhere new, which tells the child it recovered. If you have to move it in front of the children, say from the dog’s bed, lift it with kitchen tongs or an oven glove so the rule still stands.

When does the Elf on the Shelf arrive and leave?

The official UK site says Santa sends most Scout Elves during Scout Elf Return Week, which ends on 1 December, and that some arrive a few days later, even in the second week of December. Taste of Home gives the same window, 24 November to 1 December. Here is how each start date plays out in 2026.

StartFirst morningMornings to Christmas Eve

A shorter runSaturday 12 December13

The elf leaves on Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December in 2026. The usual exit is overnight with Santa, with a goodbye note waiting on Christmas morning; other families sit the elf by the chimney ready for the sleigh, or hold a goodbye party that afternoon. Our Elf on the Shelf arrival ideas cover the first morning and the welcome letter.

What to tell your kids about Elf on the Shelf

The same questions come back every year. These answers keep to the rules without a long explanation.

The questionWhat to say
Why can’t I touch it?Its magic is fragile. A touch can stop it flying to the North Pole tonight.
Why didn’t it move last night? It loved that spot, or the weather at the North Pole kept every elf at home.
Does it tell Santa when I’m naughty? It tells Santa about your whole day, and the good bits make the longest reports.
Is it watching me in the bath?Never. Elves don’t go into bathrooms or bedrooms.
Why does my friend’s elf make more mess?Every elf has its own personality, and every family names its own.
Where does it go after Christmas?Back to the North Pole, to help Santa get ready for next year.
Is the elf real?Ask what they think first. A child who has worked it out can become the elf’s helper for younger brothers and sisters.

What age is Elf on the Shelf for?

Taste of Home says most parents wait until a child is between 2 and 3. At the other end, the University of Exeter’s 2018 Santa survey of 1,200 people found that the average age for no longer believing in Father Christmas was 8 (8.03 in England, 8.58 in Scotland), and 65% kept playing along after they knew.

  • 2 to 3: hiding places at their eye level, no mess, the same few rooms.
  • 4 to 7: hunts in every room, notes from the elf and small, tidy mischief.
  • 8 to 10: many have worked it out. Make them the elf’s assistant for younger siblings.
  • 11 and over: retire the elf, or hand it to the oldest child to run for the little ones.

Why are some parents against Elf on the Shelf?

The first objection is surveillance. Professor Laura Pinto has argued that a toy which watches children and reports to an authority teaches them that being spied on is normal, and Kate Tuttle, writing in The Atlantic, dismissed the elf as marketing presented as tradition.

The second is workload: 24 new set-ups, with elaborate scenes shared online, and Vox warned the elf can breed competition and add holiday stress. On the other side, Judith Tellerman, a clinical psychology professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, sees the elf as a visual cue for children to be kind.

Tip

If the watching bothers you, change what the elf reports: kind acts instead of bad behaviour. If the workload does, start on 12 December and the run drops to 13 mornings.

What you need to start Elf on the Shelf

The official box set has the book and the elf. Unofficial elves sold on their own come without the book, so you tell the story and the three rules yourself in a welcome letter. Beyond that, nothing is required: a sticky note and a new hiding place each night are enough.

For outfits, props and ready-made scenes, see our Elf on the Shelf accessories, and for the goodbye on Christmas Eve, the Christmas Eve boxes in our Kids and Elf range.

Frequently asked questions

What are the three rules of Elf on the Shelf?

Don’t touch the elf, or it may lose its magic. The elf never speaks or moves while the children are awake, though it reports to Santa every night. And it goes back to the North Pole with Santa on Christmas Eve.

Can 10 year olds touch an Elf on the Shelf?

By the rules, nobody touches the elf, whatever their age. In practice most 10 year olds have worked it out: the average age for no longer believing in Father Christmas was 8 in the University of Exeter’s survey. Let an older child become the elf’s helper and move it for younger siblings.

Do parents move the Elf on the Shelf?

Yes. A parent moves the elf every night once the children are asleep, which in the story is the elf flying to the North Pole and back. A phone reminder for late evening helps on busy nights.

At what age do you stop doing Elf on the Shelf?

The natural point is when the youngest child stops believing, which the University of Exeter’s survey puts at around 8 on average. An older child can keep it going for the little ones, and the elf can retire once the youngest is 11.

Why are parents against Elf on the Shelf?

Some object to a toy that watches children and reports back; Professor Laura Pinto has argued it teaches them that surveillance is normal. Others dislike the nightly workload and the pressure of elaborate scenes posted online.

Does the elf leave on Christmas Eve morning or night?

The official site says Scout Elves go back to the North Pole with Santa on Christmas Eve, so the elf leaves that night and the children find a goodbye note on Christmas morning. In 2026, Christmas Eve is Thursday 24 December.

What does 67 mean on Elf on the Shelf?

“67”, said six-seven, was Dictionary.com’s 2025 Word of the Year: slang from the song Doot Doot (6 7) by Skrilla, which Dictionary.com calls impossible to define. If your children use it, one easy set-up is the elf holding a 6 and a 7 made from pipe cleaners on 6 or 7 December.

Can I buy an Elf on the Shelf without the book?

The official Elf on the Shelf box set includes the storybook, while unofficial elves are sold on their own. Without the book, explain the rules in a short welcome letter from the elf on its first morning.
