The history of Christmas automata
In the early 1800s, European clockmakers began making automata or mechanical figures that could move and perform simple tasks. These were usually made in the form of animals or human figures, and some could even play music. By the mid-19th century, these automata had become very popular and many people began to collect them.
One of the most famous collections of automata was made by Charles Dickens. Dickens was a great fan of these mechanical figures and even featured them in some of his stories. In 1843, he published a story entitled “The Christmas Carol”, which includes a scene with an automaton reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh.
Today, automata are still manufactured by some companies, and they remain popular collectors’ items.
